What Is Aerial Yoga? Its Charm and Benefits

Also known as hammock yoga, aerial yoga uses a fabric hammock suspended from the ceiling.

YUKI

It's sometimes called "flying yoga," and people picture you just hanging in mid-air—but there's actually a lot more to it than that!

The hammock acts like a support tool, gently helping you stretch further than you could on your own.

YUKI

Poses that feel out of reach in regular yoga suddenly become possible—the hammock gives you just enough support to stretch further. It genuinely feels amazing!

Worried it's too advanced for beginners?

Don't be—aerial yoga is gentle enough that it's even used in physical rehabilitation. Some classes do include more acrobatic moves, but those are always clearly labeled as intermediate or advanced.

That said, some poses involve hanging upside down, so a few people might feel a bit lightheaded afterward.

It's best to skip aerial yoga if you:

  • Have a heart condition or other underlying health issue
  • Are pregnant (or menstruating—better to sit this one out)
  • Get motion sickness easily

Why We Recommend Udara

Udara, a yoga and wellness retreat in the Seseh area just past Canggu, offers aerial yoga classes every day.

An Ocean-View Yoga Studio

▼The Aerial Yoga Studio

Udara sits right in front of Seseh Beach, with a yoga studio that looks straight out over the ocean.

With two dedicated studios full of hanging hammocks, they run at least two aerial yoga classes every day.

YUKI

Both studios look out over the ocean, and that open, breezy feeling makes the whole experience even better.

▼The Studio for Regular Yoga and Breathwork

This is where regular yoga, meditation, and breathwork classes take place. Unlike typical Japanese studios, there are no mirrors here—instead, it's a wonderfully open-air space with no walls at all, letting the breeze flow through in every direction.

▼Pool and Sauna Facilities
