Ever found yourself in Bali thinking: I want Indonesian food tonight — but somewhere truly special?
John Hardy in Seminyak is exactly that place — and most people walk right past it without knowing it exists.
The highlight is their Sunset Picnic — a time-limited evening experience where you sip cocktails as the sun melts into the Indian Ocean. Pure magic.
In this post, I'm sharing everything that makes John Hardy worth seeking out — the sunset, the food, and the whole unforgettable atmosphere.
YUKIHeads up: this one is genuinely off the radar. 🌅
・You're dreaming of a romantic sunset dinner in Bali.
・You're done with the obvious spots and want something more interesting in Seminyak.
・You want exceptional Indonesian food — nasi campur done right.

📍 Finding John Hardy

Inside a stunning two-story heritage building, the upper floor is home to a beautifully curated jewelry collection — each piece displayed with quiet elegance.

Delicate floral arrangements are tucked throughout the space, adding a touch of romance that puts you instantly at ease.
🌅 The Sunset Picnic Experience

Hidden inside the jewelry boutique is an enormous, open-air courtyard — one of Seminyak's best-kept secrets.
The lawn is immaculately manicured — lush, green, and impossibly photogenic.

From around 5:00 PM, parasols and chairs are set up across the lawn for the Sunset Picnic — a dreamy open-air session designed for golden hour.

Settle into your seat, let the evening breeze wash over you, and watch the sky transform.
I skipped the classic piña colada and went for the Pandan Colada instead — and I'm so glad I did.
Infused with pandan leaf, blended with coconut water and lime — it's tropical, aromatic, and distinctly Balinese.

That vivid green drink is Jamu — Bali's traditional herbal tonic, and a must-try for the curious.
Six varieties are on offer: non-alcoholic at IDR 65,000, or spiked with spirits at IDR 180,000
— your call.
Think of it as Indonesia's answer to a wellness tonic
— a blend of turmeric, ginger, herbs, and spices with roots in centuries-old traditional medicine.
It comes in three intensities —
Light, Medium, and Full. Go Light for an easy introduction, or Full if you want the real, full-bodied herbal experience.

For snacks, order the Assorted Krupuk — a Balinese classic you'll be glad you tried.

Indonesia's beloved fried cracker — impossibly light and satisfying to crunch through.
Made from a cassava base mixed with shrimp, acorn, or other ingredients, then deep-fried to a crisp. Locals love them alongside nasi campur —
and once you try the combination, you'll understand why.

The magic of a Bali sunset isn't just the sun itself — it's watching the entire sky shift through layers of color, from gold to amber to deep violet. Dramatic, breathtaking, and over too soon. 🌇
🍽️ Dinner Time: Indonesian Food at Its Finest

Once the sun has fully set, it's time to move indoors and let the real feast begin.

Head inside to your table, settle in, and prepare for some of the best Indonesian food you'll have in Bali.

The concept here is unapologetically Indonesian — no fusion, no compromise.
But true to the John Hardy name, everything is elevated — refined, thoughtfully plated, and utterly delicious.

As someone who lives in Bali and eats nasi campur regularly, I can say this version genuinely impressed me — it's the one I'd recommend without hesitation.
What's on the Plate
- Soup:A light, nourishing broth made with moringa, celebrated as one of the world's most nutrient-dense superherbs.
- Satay:チキンのつみれ風の焼き鳥
- Lawar:A traditional Balinese dish typically made with pork, but here reimagined with smoked mushroom and jackfruit, tossed with fresh greens for a lighter, plant-forward take.
- Beef SteakCooked to your preference; the photo shows medium-rare, which I'd highly recommend.
- Turmeric Rice:Fragrant, golden rice cooked with fresh turmeric — earthy, warming, and beautiful on the plate.
- Sambal MatahBali's signature raw sambal: finely chopped shallots, lemongrass, chili, and coconut oil. Spoon it over your rice or steak for a burst of fresh heat that ties the whole plate together.
Summary

By the time the sun fully disappears, the courtyard transforms — soft lighting takes over and the whole space feels genuinely magical.
The restaurant closes at 9:00 PM, so arrive well before sunset to make the most of the full experience — picnic, cocktails, dinner, and all.
