What Is Gachoan, and Why Is It So Popular?
As far as mie goreng goes, this is the safe bet everyone recommends.

This photo is from the branch on Jalan Teuku Umar in Denpasar.
Mie Gachoan is a chain specializing in mie goreng, with locations all across Indonesia.

The sign and logo are consistent at every branch, so you may well spot one while driving or riding around Bali.
YUKIYou'll find a branch pretty much everywhere—Jimbaran, Canggu, Kuta, Legian, Denpasar, Sanur, you name it.
The Must-Try Mie Goreng
Its approachable flavor is exactly why people keep coming back.

The signature dish—and namesake of the restaurant—is Mie Gachoan, the very dish that famous Japanese musician kept ordering.
At just over a dollar, the price alone probably explains a lot of its popularity in Indonesia.

The set includes the stir-fried noodles plus two fried wontons.
The wontons are filled with ground chicken.
Choose your spice level

Spice levels range from 0 to 8. I figured level 3 would be medium, but it came loaded with chopped chilies—way more than expected. All I could taste was heat, and my mouth was on fire.
The noodles themselves are light, thin, and slightly chewy, and the "secret sauce" everyone talks about really did live up to the hype.
▼Noticeably fewer chilies this time

At first glance, it looked like there were no chilies at all, but they were definitely there once I started eating. Compared to level 3, though, the heat was just right—and I could actually taste that famous sauce this time!

Delivery runs a bit pricier than eating in-store, at 15,000 IDR
Still, that's under two dollars—hard to beat.

Spotted: the "chili guy" (lol)

While eating in-store, I noticed someone carrying huge sacks into the kitchen. Looking closer, both bags were packed with fresh chilies—makes sense for a place this popular; they must go through them fast.
How to Order
Just as easy to order for delivery as it is to eat in—another reason it's so popular.
Order at the counter

Right when you walk in, there's a counter for ordering and payment. Just let them know if it's for eating in or takeout, then place your order.
Grab a seat and wait

The interior feels like a stylish cafeteria, and it's actually hugely popular with Indonesian students thanks to the low prices and great taste.
Waiting area for takeout

Grab and Gojek drivers, along with takeout customers, wait here while the food is being prepared.

Your receipt has an order number, and they'll hand you a buzzer that vibrates once your food's ready.

Bonus: A Café Worth Stopping By Afterward
Here's a nearby café that's easy to swing by right after your meal.
It's just a 4-minute walk (or 1-minute ride) from Gachoan.

There's a really lovely café just near the Gachoan branch I visited in Denpasar.

It's called 9/11 Café & Concept Store.
The café occupies the ground floor, while upstairs houses a stylish barbershop and shops.

It's popular with digital nomads, and you'll see a real mix of Indonesians and foreigners there. Such a comfortable spot.

Their carefully brewed latte comes with adorable latte art that's sure to bring a smile.
It's the perfect way to cool down after all that spice.
