Location & Access

It's about a 40-minute drive from the airport, located in Uluwatu's Bingin area.

Bingin is well known for surfing, with stylish surf shops like Drifter and Deus nearby. It used to be a spot only surfers frequented, but in recent years it's filled up with trendy coffee shops and boutiques.

A Wonderfully Open Interior

At first glance, it looks like a fairly ordinary café — but somehow, it puts you in a great mood.

Bali itself has a certain energy, but this place feels like it's on another level entirely.

Inside ALCHEMY, there's a branch of % Arabica, the coffee brand from Kyoto. It's their second location in Bali, after the one at Beachwalk shopping mall in Kuta.

Honestly, the iced café latte here might be the best I've had in all of Bali.

You can order coffee right at your ALCHEMY table, so be sure to give it a try.

On this particular day, there happened to be a live band playing, making for a relaxed lunch.

After lunch, I explored the shop area too.

The main highlight is the bulk-buy section sitting right in the middle of the store, where you can purchase salt, flour, and nuts by weight.

What caught my eye was natural sea salt from Bali's Amed region. It's sold from 100g upward, priced at about $1 per 100g.

YUKI

Kusamba salt is the famous one in Bali, so Amed salt is a rare find — makes a great souvenir.

They also sell dried herbal teas and herb powders, all in simple, stylish packaging.

Both were priced from around $8.

While the café itself is open-air, the shop area is indoors and air-conditioned — which might explain why so many people are working on laptops at the tables there. Could be a good spot for digital nomads.

Vibrant and Delicious: The Plant-Based Menu

Everything at ALCHEMY is plant-based — even the burgers and pizzas are made entirely from plants.

What exactly is plant-based food?

It refers to food made using plant-derived ingredients.

Animal products like meat, milk, eggs, butter, and cheese are left out entirely,

with coconut and cashews used instead as substitutes for butter and cheese.

Among the many plant-based dishes, what felt most distinctly "ALCHEMY" to me was the salad bar, which works a bit like nasi campur.

You first choose a base — brown rice, mixed grains, or leafy greens like lettuce — then pick four side dishes of your choice.

Basically, you decide whether your base is rice or a full salad.

The rice has a pleasantly dry texture, which actually pairs really well with the salad-style sides.

I chose vegetable fritters, roasted cauliflower, broccoli and greens tossed in basil, and a beet and potato marinade.

There are 10 dressings to choose from, and they'll let you taste them first.

I went with hummus and a vinaigrette. Choosing two dressings costs about $1 extra.

My friend ordered the jackfruit wrap — BBQ-flavored jackfruit tucked inside a flaxseed wrap, a great source of healthy fats.

Jackfruit takes on a meat-like texture when cooked, which is why it shows up so often in vegan cooking here in Bali. Try it and you'll be genuinely surprised — it really does feel like eating meat.

YUKI

The jackfruit sold at markets or as fruit is ripe and very sweet, but apparently it's the young, unripe jackfruit that's used for cooking.

There's also a large pizza oven inside, and orders for pizza kept coming in one after another.

The cheese appears to be made from cashews and pili nuts.

This Tangerine Mojito, about $2.50, blew me away. Despite the name, it's a non-alcoholic mocktail — essentially fresh orange juice, but true to ALCHEMY's style, made with honey and a few other citrus varieties blended in.

The Takeaway

The Uluwatu area where ALCHEMY sits has a refined, distinct atmosphere unlike the rest of Bali.

Definitely worth a visit.
